Portugal receives many deportees from the United States, many who haven’t been here since they were children, who don’t even speak Portuguese. But little is known of the ones that Portugal expels. Many have committed crimes or are undocumented. A law has discreetly been changed so that even people who were born in Portugal are being sent “back” to Cape Verde, as well as those who have lived in the country since childhood and those who have small children here. The Cape Verdian authorities talk about “human rights violation” when they mention the case of a man deported with the bracelet of a Psychiatric Department of a hospital in Lisbon. That was his last home in Portugal.
